Allie! 'The Floor Scrapers' was at The Frist a couple years ago and I was sooo enthralled by it. The subject is so simple and matter of fact but the scale of the piece (3x5ish) makes the men's arms feel so life-like...in my world. And I'm such a fan of big blocks of color and strokes.

Yay for art adventures...I too long for more art knowledge and don't devote enough time to continuing intake. Thanks for reminding me of this and of that artist!

Ah Heirloom Jewelry... It tells a story of the past and it previous owner, but also tags along with you in the present. Love Love Love! My everyday jewelry is my engagement ring (which my Dad gave to my mother) and a double channel band ring with 16 Diamonds for my 16th Birthday (the diamonds are from a cluster ring from his Mother). Heirloom Jewelry is my favorite!

it's interesting to me how art in it's multiple forms have transformed in america. particularly when thinking about the common bifurcation of culture (high/avant garde vs. pop/fad/low/folk, academic vs. untrained) and the respective demographic's proclivity to legitimize or champion specific forms or manifestations of art. i always gravitate to individuals who have immersed themselves in a specific corner of multiple types of art/music/literature/etc. - they know so much! but it seems that a working knowledge of many areas is much more common today. i fall into this category, and often wish i'd hang my hat on one area rather than briefly visit many as a tourist.

reading your poignant comment - can picking a “favorite” really be a goal–are you picking a favorite emotion? - as well as recently being steeped in british aristocracy (thank you downton abbey) leaves me wondering whether or not society has moved away from prescribed, "proper" emotions and emerged into an era marked by personal meaning-making. i think it's far more subjective today, but yet i still gravitate toward those specialists who have taken a form and attempted to master it, to appreciate it for reasons that transcend their personal and emotional taste. i think that, in so doing, the history and story of art (whatever type or form) speaks into the participant, and affects change rather than a mere response. for me, thats when art has real power.

that being said, great post! my favorite art pieces are the sculptures of rodin, and i have your husband to thank for that!
